I used to struggle with asking for testimonials at the beginning of my business because I felt awkward about it. I also felt scared – what if I found out my clients HATED the work I was doing?! Most of the time though, I would just completely forget to ask for them at all!
When to Ask for a Testimonial
I normally wait at least 2-3 months before asking a client for feedback and a testimonial. I think it takes a bit for your client to measure your performance and how it is truly bettering their business!
Start Your Email with a Compliment
Want to get your email off to a great start? Compliment your clients and let them know how much you are enjoying working with them. They want to hear that you are liking them too!! I didn’t realize this in the beginning but all those feelings of fear that they don’t like you? Your clients feel them too! So be sure to let them know you are loving the work and them!

Be upfront with how you’ll use the testimonial.
Let them know why you want feedback and how you’ll use it! Whether it’s for your own reference or because you want to put those amazing words on your website – let your client know exactly how you’ll be using them so they aren’t blindsided if they see their words on your Insta story the next day!
Include a Call to Action
Go ahead and invite them to fill out a questionnaire or provide them with a list of questions they need to answer for you! Now’s your time to collect all their thoughts so don’t miss any important questions you might want to be answered.
Close with a Thank You
End your email by thanking your clients for their time and the opportunity to work with them!
And that’s it! You’re ready to ask them for a testimonial sans awkwardness and robotic uber-professional voice!
